Safety

Overview

Safety is a very crucial thing among the experiments of GEC-CHINA. Before doing the experiment, we had already learned some knowledge about lab safety and we knew how to solve some simple but accidental issues during the experiment. In addition, two teachers would supervise us during the process of the experiments. They demonstrated the operation of some complex machines step by step. So, our experiment was conducted in a very safe environment. There are no ethical issues in our experiment because we did not use human or animals as the experiment object. Also, all the pictures, data and videos we use in human practice are recorded by the person who engaged in the project. All of our activities are conducted in a proper environment.

Basic safety rules:

  • We do not allow any inflammable or combustible items to be brought into the laboratory without permission. Smoking and setting off open flames are not allowed in and around the laboratory.
  • Each laboratory, including the corridor, is equipped with various fire extinguishers that may be needed in the laboratory, and the experimental personnel are trained to use them.
  • We ensure that the laboratory, as well as the surrounding escape area, is clean and tidy.
  • Laboratory waste items need to be put into anti-pollution garbage bags, centralized processing by professionals. Waste liquid cannot be directly poured into the sewer; after special treatment for different liquids, such as dilution, it should be poured into the designated sink.
  • We are not allowed to run, play, or talk loudly in the experimental area.
  • The lab coat can only be worn in the lab area. It is forbidden to take the lab coat and the items in the lab out of the lab.
  • Disposable gloves should not touch the door handle or your body after touching pollutants.
  • After using the experimental reagent, put it back to the original position. If it is not enough, you can contact the staff to change and add it. Used reagents should not be returned to the bottle.
  • No eating and drinking in the laboratory. Keep reagents away from your nose and eyes. Avoid direct contact with reagents, and do not taste them. It is forbidden to sit on the bench or anywhere in the laboratory, except the designated chairs.
  • After the experiment, use the designated disinfectant to disinfect the experimental area.

Instrument safety

  1. Centrifuge
    1. The centrifuge tubes in the rotor body must be placed symmetrically in an even number.
    2. Lock the door cover of the centrifuge tightly after closing it.
  2. Electrophoresis Machine
    1. We must not contact the electrode after the machine is energized.
    2. We must not temporarily add or unplug the output cable plug to avoid a short circuit after the machine is turned on.
    3. Electrophoresis of different media supports cannot be performed at the same time.
  3. Gel Imager
    1. The imager should not be operating when the door is open in order to prevent ultraviolet leakage.
    2. We should not touch the keyboard, warehouse door, or light box power switch with gloves in order to prevent contamination.
    3. The observation room containing the gel imager should be dry.
  4. Pipette
    1. After using it, restore it to the maximum range.
