Origin of the Project
One of our team members comes from Shandong Province, which is the highest vegetable production in China. Here, most farmers derive their income from vegetable and crops. At the same time, he has found that many farmers are plagued by plant nematode infestations, and the lack of effective treatments of treating nematode has resulted in their incomes being greatly affected. Witnessing the sadness on the farmers' faces, he wished he could do something about it.
Brainstorm
To better help local farmers solve production-related problems, this team member shared the issue with other members of the team, leading to a heated brainstorming session. After preliminary discussions, we decided to choose Bacillus velezensis as the chassis organism to construct a nematode-killing circuit, with the goal of eventually developing it into biopesticides for practical use.
Background Research
To better advance the implementation of the project, we conducted extensive background research on the two key aspects of the project: plant nematode diseases and biopesticides. On one hand, we gathered information to understand the negative impact of nematode diseases nationwide and the current state of control measures. On the other hand, we comprehensively explored biopesticides from political, market, social, and technological perspectives.
Project Prototype
After preliminary discussions, we completed the initial design of the project—Nematode Buster. This part is based on the design and modification of Bacillus velezensis, primarily colonizing on plant roots to kill nematodes.
Project Optimisation
Later, after discussions among team members and consultations with our instructor, we decided to optimize the project by adding the "Plant Guard" component. This involved replacing certain functional elements within the original circuit, using Bacillus subtilis as the chassis organism, primarily to enhance plant immunity.
Communication
In our overall Human Practices work, engagement with stakeholders is an indispensable part. This year, we conducted in-depth interactions with four main groups: Farmer, Academy, Industry, Government. Through these interactions, we gained insights into the strengths and weaknesses of our project from the perspectives of different stakeholders, and we better understood the diverse needs of each group regarding the project.
Improvements
After engaging with stakeholders, we gained a clear understanding of the project's broad application prospects as well as its current shortcomings. Based on feedback from various stakeholders, we have continuously optimized the project.
Future Work
In the future, we will continue to carry out subsequent experiments to verify the effectiveness of our project products to improve the insecticidal efficacy, promote the production and marketing of the products, and give more hope to the farmers who are affected by nematode diseases!
