Safety

OVERVIEW

Our team values safety in the lab as well as safety of our product. We adhere to all of the UCSD regulations regarding safety, having all members working in lab go through a trainingcourse as well as proper paperwork to ensure optimal safety. We wear lab coats and gloves at all times. This lab was conducted in a biosafety level 2 lab however, the components we worked on were mostly BSL1 with the exception of C. acnes cultures which are considered BSL2. Bacteria related work was done near biosafety cabinet. In this facility the lab benches. All components are part of the iGEM white list. All experiments took place in a biosafety level 1 microbiological laboratory, which was equipped with essential safety features such as biohazard disposal containers and handwashing stations. Each workbench had seating, and the back of the lab housed -80°C freezers for sample storage. Adjacent to the main lab space was a dedicated incubator room containing various incubators, freezers, and a fume hood. Additional temperature-regulated rooms were available for experiments requiring controlled conditions, either warm (37°C) or cold (4°C). A separate dark room was used for gel electrophoresis analysis. The experiments were carefully planned and executed under the supervision of trained scientists, utilizing sterile equipment and proper waste disposal practices to maintain a contamination-free environment. All activities complied with relevant biosafety regulations, and the organisms and materials used in the project were in full alignment with the approved list for the iGEM competition.

EXAMPLE

We used E coli DHF Alpha for the experiment. For performing this experiment/ project. None of the parts that we used were hazardous on their own. In this project, we cultured Cutibacterium acnes and lab for biofilm production. We modeled the plasmid for this project and used the plasmid for Addgene.
