Integrated human practices

Integrated HP

Introduction

This year’s iGEM journey has ensured the engagement of six main groups of stakeholders identified during our stakeholder analysis.

These groups are: burn survivors and their caregivers, healthcare providers, public health and ethics professionals, pharmaceutical companies, law experts, and finally general communities.

We ensured to get regular feedback from these relevant stakeholders during different stages of our project’s journey. This human-centric approach included a number of meetings, interviews and visits represented in the interactive timeline of our project’s journey.

On the Integrated Human Practices page, detailed information about all the stakeholder conversations are seen in a five-stage development process. Additionally, three main tools are used to represent this information in a more organized and accessible way.

Recommended Tools

Integrated HP Cycle

Fig 1. Integrated HP Cycle

This is the preliminary tool that any team should depend on to connect an iGEM project to the world. Starting by a clear identification of the targeted problem and its associated sectors. Then, understand all the aspects of the problem and trying to communicate with relevant sectors to understand their values and needs. After that comes the integration of this feedback into the project’s design. Finally, the implementation of this project into the real-world hoping to make a change in the life of those in need.

Therefore, we advise all iGEM teams to start their project’s journey with a similar tool to organize the development of their idea until its implementation in the real-world.

Thanks to this cycle, we managed to divide our Integrated HP journey into five main stages, where we have grouped all the feedback and the reflections that reshaped the developmental process of SONG-H.

Feedback Template

Feedback is the basis of integration of an iGEM project with the world. To make sure that every feedback is taken into consideration, we have developed a Feedback Template that is inspired by frameworks used by previous iGEM teams. This template consists of:

  • Purpose: This is where we state the relevance and the motivation behind our meeting with the stakeholder in question

  • Contribution: This is where we highlight the main points of the engagement with the stakeholder, which can be reflected on the project’s development.

  • Core: In this part, we give further details about the discussion and the integration of the feedback into the project’s design.

  • Plan of action: In this final part, we describe the future steps that could further improve our design, in the same course of our discussion with the stakeholder in question

Stakeholder Cards

To categorize all experts that we contacted along our journey, we used identification cards for every stakeholder group. Each card is associated with the specific icon and color corresponding to the stakeholder to help with the feedback collection process. More information about the stakeholder categorization can be found in the Essential Human Practices page in the stakeholder analysis part.

Finally, all these tools are grouped together to build the core of our Project’s Journey, which is represented in the following five staged-interactive timeline:

Close the loop

At the end of our long integrated HP journey, we wanted to close the loop between what we learnt from relevant stakeholders and the true impact of our project on the world. This is why we engaged with a variety of stakeholders in different fields including not only healthcare providers, but also important policymakers, industry partners, and community members. In total, we reached more than 100 individuals with our work through meetings, collaborations, visits, and public engagement. This extensive outreach helped us prioritize the essential values and needs of a wide variety of stakeholders.

In addition, we were keen on getting back to the stakeholder in question after integrating their feedback, to ensure the application of their opinion in the best and the most convenient way within our project. This vital engagement of relevant sectors along with our deep literature research helped reshape the development of our platform to break through the barriers of sustainability, innovation, and also safety. Finally, we tried to close the loop between our project and the world by coming up with the plan of implementation of SONG-H. This plan includes the following; the optimized design of SONG-H required to reach its full therapeutic potential, the long-term impact of our project on relevant stakeholders, and finally the future steps that could be taken to introduce our product into the market.
