Converting radiation into useful energy
Nowadays, many studies are being conducted in space, attracted by all the possibilities of space.However, space is also a harsh environment, and space radiation in particular can seriously affect life. In addition, the production of nutrients in space is also important because of the limited nutritional sources in space.
The purpose of ENEducer is not only to protect against radiation, but also to convert it into usable energy. We aim to realize ENEducer using radiation-shielding melanin and the electroactive bacterium “Shewanella oneidensis”.
Melanin is known to change its structure when exposed to radiation, resulting in the transfer of electrons. S.oneidensis also has a mechanism for releasing electrons outside the cell called the Extracellular Electron Transfer(EET) pathway. ENEducer, a melanin-induced S.oneidensis, increases the amount of electricity produced by metabolic activation by irradiation.
If these energies can be used to produce electricity and nutritional substances, they will be useful for people working in space. ENEducer believes that this will help solve the problem of space exploration.
