Overview

We are committed to ensuring the effective removal of EE2 from water. In addressing this problem, we seek to protect aquatic life and reduce the risks that EE2 poses to human health. Our project focuses on ensuring access to contraceptives and hormone treatments, while addressing their environmental impact. We focus on eliminating EE2 without restricting the availability of these essential medicines, which are critical for reproductive autonomy and hormone replacement therapy in transgender people. By developing sustainable solutions, we protect both public health and the environment, enabling the safe use of these treatments and minimizing ecological damage.

We believe in social justice and equity, so it is essential that our solutions are accessible to all communities, regardless of their economic status or location. We want the benefits of cleaner water to reach everyone equally, especially vulnerable communities. That is why we work to make our technology affordable and free of economic or social barriers. We are committed to avoiding any form of discrimination or unequal impact, ensuring that everyone has access to a healthier and safer environment.

In short, this project is more than a technical solution for us; it is an effort to respect and protect human rights, promote social equity and ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, identity or economic status, benefits from contaminant-free water and a healthier environment.

Bigger Picture

A comprehensive literature review is crucial for understanding the broader implications of the water crisis both globally and in our region, as well as the contaminants in treated wastewater. By examining existing research, we can identify patterns and gaps, helping us contextualize the impact of emerging pollutants. Furthermore, understanding the broader picture highlights the importance of innovative, sustainable strategies for water treatment in highly industrialized regions like Monterrey.

Education

Public engagement strategies are vital to inspire future thinkers and enable the general public to understand complex subjects independently.

We have developed 4 different projects with unique target groups. First, there is ALKALI, which aims to foster citizen science in the neighborhood through sampling of urban water bodies. Sintetibacteria is a coloring book that explains complex ideas of synthetic biology through cartoonish illustrations. ‘Un nuevo amanecer’ is a visual novel videogame for teenagers that showcases the making of synthetic biology projects. Finally, we had diverse workshops for students in our campus and a symposium with the help of Biocluster Nuevo León that enabled networking opportunities and knowledge sharing.

Entrepreneurship

As we advance our bioremediation project, we recognize the importance of translating scientific innovation into real-world impact. To achieve this, we have developed a viable business model that not only addresses the practical applications of our technology in the industry but also ensures its scalability and sustainability. We have identified possible stakeholders, risks and possible challenges for its implementation in the market.

Integrated Human Practices

For our project to real-world approach challenges, our attention to feedback and reflection from indispensable stakeholders was vital, ensuring that the solution was developed with consideration of societal needs. By engaging with experts, community leaders, and industries, we shaped our project to reflect environmental, social and ethical values.

Throughout our research journey, collaborations has showed us the power of engaging with media, institutions and other iGEM teams. We have exchanged knowledge and shared resources. These partnerships allowed us to enhance our scientific approach and enrich our outreach initiatives.
