Sustainable Development Goals

Overview

In 2015, the United Nations introduced 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as the final deadline of 2030 approaches, progress towards achieving these goals remains a concern. After careful scrutiny, we hope that our program will advance the goals of good health and well being (SDG3), quality education (SDG4), responsible consumption and production (SDG12), and partnership for the goals (SDG17).

Good Health and Well Being

Our project focuses on healthier diets, hoping to improve public health by reducing sugar intake and using healthier sugar substitute products. By producing a special kind of sweet protein called Thaumatin by tomato chassis, we are looking forward to satisfying people's need for sweetness in a way that doesn't hurt their health. Quality Education

We conducted several educational programs to educate the public on synthetic biology, different types of sugar substitutes and stressed the importance of healthy diets. We have hosted primary school students from underdeveloped areas to introduce them to synthetic biology as well as biosecurity talks at famous tourist attractions in our city, attracting people of all ages. Responsible Consumption

Responsible production means that we need to consider the safety of our program carefully, and we have taken steps to ensure the safety of our program in the areas of tomato cultivation management and production process monitoring. We have written laws and regulations and designed production control systems to ensure that our products are strictly regulated and under control. Learn more in Safety.

Partnerships for the goals

As we drove our project forward, we focused on exchanges with different teams, so we participated in several international exchanges, such as zoom meeting for teams working on plant chassis, in which we gained inspiration to improve our project. In addition, we have invited international students from the UK and Japan to visit our lab, and we have introduced them to synthetic biology and our project, which they are very interested in.
