Introduction
We hope to improve public’s positive and accurate understanding of sugar and
fiber through some activities. We
conducted science popularization activities on different topics,
targeting audiences ranging
from kindergarten students to
adults. At the same time we published popular science articles, organized online
lectures and
offline community activities to let different people know about sugar control and fiber
enhancement
and related popular science knowledge related to our project.

Offline SynBio Lecture
Summary of lecture content: concept
introduction of synthetic biology; influence of synthetic biology
For
more information about this lecture,
please refer to our presentation slides (+PPT 1).
Since this presentation is geared toward upperclassmen, most of whom have some basic
knowledge of biology, our content will be a bit more academic. Everyone was able to
understand it well and gave us some feedback to improve it!
The purpose of the lecture is to let
more people understand the nature of synthetic biology and arouse interest in synthetic
biology.
Lecture object: sophomores in the
Integration Department of Hangzhou School Affiliated to Shanghai Foreign School
Lecture effect: Basically, all
students can understand it. After direct inquiry, most students said that they have a
basic
understanding of synthetic biology.

pic 3
Problems encountered during the
lecture: The time is not well coordinated, resulting in the delay of the
lecture time
and progress.
pic 4
pic 5
Reflection and improvement: Coordinate
the time and personnel of each class in advance of the next lecture, and strive to leave
a good
impression on the audience.
Kindergarten lecture
Purpose of this lecture: Our school is
a K-12 institution. In an effort to engage a wider audience and increase their
understanding of
biological knowledge, we have chosen to focus on young children.
Main contents: Our project is related
to intestinal digestion and will also provide an initial understanding of gut microbiota
to the
children, promoting knowledge about protecting the gut. Educating young children about
gut
microbiota can help them pay more attention to healthy eating and hygiene habits in
their daily
lives.
For
more information about this lecture,
please refer to our presentation slides (+PPT 2).
In order to make it easier for the children to understand the lectures, we used many
real-life examples to combine with the knowledge to trigger their desire to explore the
knowledge. The small games related to academics set up during the lectures also
enlivened the atmosphere and created a cheerful and active learning atmosphere. Every
child was able to actively participate in the interaction.
Process of this lecture: With the help
of the teacher, we contacted the head of the kindergarten of the school, coordinated the
lecture
time, and two members of our team and the general captain went to the kindergarten to
conduct a
microflora science class for the kindergarten children. The class lasted about 20
minutes, and about
20 children participated in the class. We also prepared some small gifts for the
children who
answered the questions actively. The whole class went smoothly.
pic 6
Classroom engagement: Most children
basically understand, a few may not be able to understand, the teaching effect is
OK.
Some children are not able to understand the content of our lectures, and
some terms may not be understood, but the class atmosphere and interactive links are
actively
participated in the children.
Some children can not concentrate on the lesson; Being shy about answering
questions leads to silence or stagnation.

pic 8
Reflection: In the next lecture,
perhaps we can choose a slightly older group to ensure the smooth progress and
development of the
activity.
Because kindergarten children may not be easy to understand some of the more
professional knowledge at the current stage, the effect of popular science may be
relatively weak.
If different groups of people, Such as primary school students, are selected as popular
science
objects, the effect may be different, but the overall progress of this activity is
relatively
smooth.
Community activities
Theme of the event: Sugar
Purpose:
1. Sources of sugar, advantages and disadvantages and ways to protect
teeth.
2. Introduce project objectives and products
Location: Tianlin Community and
Kangjian Community
Participants: All team members and
children who have signed up
Activity implementation
Preparatory process:
1. Community publicity and registration
2. Prepare the lecture PPT
3. Prepare for the promotion of QR code on each account platform
4. Prepare candy, clay and a sign-in sheet
For more information about this lecture, please refer to our presentation slides.
Specific procedures and links
1. Import: Let children guess what is in the bag (candy)
2. Topic introduction
3. Interactive session: Give candy to each group of children and ask them to
sort it; Ask and share children's classification methods; Watch an animated tooth decay
film
4. Related explanation: Sources of sugar; The pros and cons of sugar; Tooth
protection; Project objectives and products
5. Art creation: Clay to make your favorite candy
6. Sharing and communication: Children share their works and
discoveries
7. Summary: Summarize the activity and emphasize the main points of
learning
8. Extended activities: learn to search on the project account after
class
The community activity went well in general, and our
interaction with the children was also very good. After teaching the children about
sugar, we asked
the children to make different shapes of candy with clay, and the children were actively
involved.
What should be improved is that we did not know that some children were allergic to clay
before the
activity, and we should know the relevant situation earlier to ensure the smooth
progress of the
activity.

Online Multi-school lecture
Summary of lecture content
(personnel, coordination process, duration)
The lecture was jointly organized by Shanghai International Studies
University Hangzhou Affiliated School and iGEM School team of Link Education Shanghai
Campus. We are
also honored to have Masters in Biology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to share
their
knowledge and insights with us. Four members of our school team participated in the
lecture, which
took about half an hour. Synthetic biology has evolved from a preliminary concept to a
hot topic in
the scientific community today, with many wondering what are the key technologies in the
field, how
they have advanced the field, and how we can use these technologies to design and build
new
biological systems. Our school team talked about the development history of synthetic
biology, some
ethical issues and risks, and the stories of people involved.
pic 13
Purpose of the lecture
Synthetic biology has evolved from a preliminary concept to a hot topic in
the scientific community today, and many people are curious about what are the key
technologies in
the field, how are they driving the development of the field, how can we use these
technologies to
design and build new biological systems, and we want to educate you about synthetic
biology, I also
cooperated with students from other schools to complete this lecture and communicated
with
professional teachers. We look forward to meeting and exchanging ideas online as we
delve deeper
into the world of synthetic biology.
For more information about this lecture,
please refer to our presentation slides (+PPT 4).
We have also provided links to the sessions to be viewed online for some of you who are
not comfortable traveling offline to hear the talks. We also made only one promotional
poster, and the team members as well as our teacher friends helped us publicize it on
their social media apps. More people were able to learn about sugar and fiber control
and the popularization of science.
Lecture effect
Overall, the lectures went smoothly and the connection was smooth. At the
same time, new knowledge was popularized by students and teachers from other
schools.
Problems encountered in
lectures
In the early rehearsals and lectures, the total time of the four of our team
members was relatively short, so in the follow-up, we refined the parts of each lecture,
added some
examples, and also added the stories of relevant characters, and finally successfully
carried out
the lecture with reasonable time planning.
Reflection &
Improvement
Our lectures are not connected and communicated with another school team. It
would be better if the parts of the two school teams could be more closely
connected.

Our articles, as well as the little science videos, have been well received after going
viral on social media. We have gained a few subscriptions from our fans, which is also
the motivation for us to persist in scientific research and science popularization for
the public good. Looking at the comments of some fans expressing gratitude and praise,
we will also continue to popularize science to help more people in need and realize our
value!
Reflection and
improvement
We can go to more platforms to collect information, so that the content of
the article will be more specific and complete.
Online video courses
In order to popularize the public's understanding of intestinal flora and
insulin, the Sugar Escape team has produced two online courses, including the production
of ppt and
the launch of Bilibili, a well-known public platform in China.

We have videos about introducing our body's gut flora and also insulin ...... uses
simpler and more straightforward language to popularize science and is better understood
by the viewer. Many viewers have liked and followed us, and some have subscribed to our
videos, which is one of the sources of motivation for us to continue to popularize
science, and we will be committed to helping more people in the future to continue to
popularize science.
The purpose of the lecture:
to give the public a simple understanding of intestinal flora and insulin,
and also to make the public more aware of the necessity of the existence of our
products. ( Regulate
intestinal flora as an auxiliary product to treat hyperglycemia)
Lecture highlights part:
Slides comprehensively introduce the two parts of intestinal flora and
insulin from all aspects, supplemented by Chinese and English bilingual subtitles for
easy
understanding.
Lecture defects and expected
improvement:
Considering the release to the domestic platform, we may try to lecture in
Chinese next time.
Conclusion
Our EDU has carried out different types of activities, through which we have
carried out science popularization of sugar control and fiber enhancement for different
groups, and
understood the public's understanding of this, so that we can better position and
develop products.
In the activities, we also have some areas that can be improved, for example, when
giving a lecture
to the kindergarten at school, it is difficult to make an appointment, we should prepare
in advance.
At the same time, we can also have more interaction with other schools or experts to
enrich the
content and fun of our activities.
