Engineering Escherichia coli to cure IBD in comprehensive ways

In order to further promote and improve the iGEM project, we joined the "Gut Alliance" organized by the LZU-China team of Lanzhou University and the Tsinghua team. We shared our experiences and insights gained from the project with iGEM teams of other universities and then exchanged ideas on the difficulties encountered in the experimental process.

Due to the conflicting schedules and locations of the team members, we held an online meeting to share the progress of our projects respectively. During the meeting, one team mentioned that they had successfully utilized the principle of logic gates to control the expression of genes in their project. Logic gates are basic components in integrated circuits, and simple logic gates can be composed of transistors. After passing through high and low electrical levels, they produce high or low electrical signals to the downstream elements. High and low electrical levels can be represented into the "true" and "false" or the 1 and 0 in binary code, thus achieving logical operations. Our project considered using miRNA to complete this design in the initial stage, making the regulation of the expression of the target gene more precise. The success of their experiment encouraged us and made us more confident that our project would achieve soon in the future.

In addition, due to the similarities in the selection of engineering bacteria, gene construction and other aspects of each other, and the data collected were different, it is not enough to communicate and learn between teams through irregular online meetings. Therefore, we also establish wechat groups for knowledge and technology exchange to achieve frequent and close resource sharing and cooperation.
