Innovative educational tools and outreach activities have the ability to establish a two-way dialogue with new communities by discussing public values and the science behind synthetic biology.
Our main educational goal in our iGEM project was the creation of a children’s book to foster parental-children interaction in the context of antibiotic resistance awareness. We also presented parts of this children’s book in a school context, as detailed in our Human Practices efforts. If you would like to learn how our children’s book integrates with the Sustainable Development Goals, which were a main focus of our project, please refer to the respective site. In particular, SDG 17 (“Partnerships for the Goals”) is addressed as an educational adventure to attract the superheroes of tomorrow.
Creating a children's book on antibiotics, resistance development, and proper usage is a significant endeavor that serves multiple educational purposes. Firstly, it addresses a critical public health issue by educating both children and parents about the nature of bacteria and antibiotics. Understanding why antibiotics must be taken to completion is crucial in preventing the development of resistant strains of bacteria, which is a growing global concern. The book's focus on children in grades 3-6 is strategic, as this age group is often affected by conditions like tonsillitis, which are commonly treated with antibiotics. By tailoring the content to their developmental level, the book ensures that the information is accessible and relatable, fostering a deeper connection with the narrative.
Moreover, the environmental impact of antibiotic contamination in water bodies is an aspect that is often overlooked but is of immense importance. Highlighting this issue educates young readers about the broader consequences of antibiotic misuse, including the harm to aquatic ecosystems and the resultant ecological imbalances. By presenting this information in an engaging story format, the book can instill a sense of responsibility and awareness in children regarding environmental stewardship.
Presenting the book in libraries and during events like picture-book-cinema connects the digital and physical realms, providing a platform for interactive learning experiences. These presentations can be complemented by educational sessions that delve into scientific work and synthetic biology, making the concepts tangible and exciting for young minds. The integration of the Hydro Guardian theme introduces children to the concept of scientific research and its applications, fostering an early interest in science and potentially inspiring future careers in the field.
In summary, the creation of this children's book by the iGEM team is a multifaceted project that educates on medical, environmental, and scientific topics. It is designed to be an inclusive, engaging, and informative tool that not only teaches about antibiotics and bacteria but also encourages a responsible attitude towards health and the environment. By doing so, it supports the development of informed, conscientious future citizens who are aware of the impact of their actions on the world around them.
