To achieve the goal of "local people solving local problems", we
need to get out of the lab. Human
practice makes our projects possible.
iGEMers around the world need to understand
the effect of
synthetic biology projects and how
society impacts our work.
Synthetic biology only
makes sense if the projects can solve real-
world
problems, and to achieve this, We need to reach out to the various groups to understand the real needs
of society. Human practice is the method and key to our engagement with the public, opening the door to
synthetic biology for the public. Through public engagement, education, and integrated human practices,
we spread the wonders of synthetic biology and receive the information and feedback needed to improve
our projects.
This year, our team focus on developing a new therapy for type 1 diabetes patients, minimizing their pain and suffer. We have done experiments in wet lab, ran equations in dry lab to finish our job. To complete this project, we have to go beyond the lab and get close to the society. We reviewed the latest scientific literature related to type 1 diabetes treatment. Then understood the relevant treatment methods and conclusions summarized by diabetes experts, and interviewed type 1 diabetes patients in public platforms, endocrinologists, students of and other relevant people.
In order to realize the public's views on our project, we widely released relevant questionnaires on the
whole platform. By setting relevant questions, people of different ages could fill
out the questionnaire together.
Finally, through
data processing, we initially obtained a variety of
opinions, which also gave us many new inspirations
and thought
about the development direction of our activities.
To ensure that our project can be truly implemented, we interviewed experts in the relevant field of first-line treatment and talked to other iGEM teams. To understand our actual products, which can be improved to truly benefit patients, we contacted relevant companies for docking. Through the whole human practice activity, we hope to let the society know more about our project and get the information we need to feed back to the experimental group and the modeling group, so as to improve our work.
There is no doubt that we can't finish the project without encountering any problems and difficulties. Therefore, we interact with different teams and schools to help us solve our problems and get new ideas and suggestions. During this summer vacation, we participated in the offline CCiC conference held in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, and successfully introduced our project and shared the current results at the meeting. After the meeting, we also participated in the activities planned by the organizer. We gained a lot from this meeting, which not only broadened our horizon, but also put forward many interesting and meaningful suggestions for our project. Together with the teams of HNU_CHINA, ShanghaiTech_CHINA, NUDT_CHINA, and FDU_CHINA, an offline exchange meeting was held in Changsha to communicate the difficulties of each other's projects and propose many feasible suggestions.
The human practice of science is not just about our own projects, it is also about synthetic biology, and
we want more
people to learn about
synthetic biology and let more
friends and students to become
future biologists.
Therefore, we went to Changjun High School to
learn
and exchange with students and help them open the
door to
synthetic biology, which successfully expanded the influence of publicity and education and
deepened the educational significance of our project.
