What is CNPEM?
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is home to Sirius, a fourth-generation particle accelerator. Sirius produces synchrotron light, a highly intense form of radiation that enables researchers to investigate the atomic and molecular structure of different materials. This technology supports advanced research in fields such as biology, materials science, and environmental science.
CNPEM also hosts several Brazilian national laboratories that facilitate groundbreaking research:
- The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS)
- The Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory (LNBio)
- The Brazilian National Laboratory for Nanotechnology (LNNano)
- The Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR)
Who are we?
We are the CNPEM-Brazil iGEM team, a group composed of students, interns, and researchers working at CNPEM. Together, we combine diverse backgrounds and skills, ranging from biology and engineering to computational science, to tackle global challenges through synthetic biology. Our team was founded in 2019, and since then, we've been committed to showcasing the strength of Brazilian science on the world stage.
Our Achievements
In 2023, we participated in the iGEM Design League, a spin-off of the global iGEM competition specifically for Latin American teams. We were honored to receive multiple awards, including:
- Best Arts Project
- Biological Engineering Excellence
- Best Team in Environment & Biodiversity
- Grand Prize Winner
