Nicotiana benthamiana

Using Nicotiana benthamiana as a synthetic biology chassis to rapidly produce important plant natural products has been a research hotspot in recent years.

Problems

However, a large amount of chlorogenic acid and its derivatives are synthesized into tobacco leaves, diverting too many metabolic flows and affecting the heterologous synthesis efficiency of other secondary metabolites with medicinal value.

By knocking out NbHQTs in the LAB strain of N.benthamiana with CRiSPR/Cas9 we create a novel N.benthamiana chassis called

Versatobacco

(abbreviation for versatile tobacco), achieving partial or complete removal of chlorogenic acid in tobacco and enhancing its talent for heterologous synthesis of high-value secondary metabolites.
