On July 10, 2024, members of the NJTech-China team went to Qiaolin Street, Pukou District, Nanjing to attend the opening ceremony and settled in the community, bringing a science popularization activity full of fun and educational significance to the children from Qiaolin Primary School. In this activity, she led the children into the world of biology through PPT explanations and explored the mysteries of biology with them.
Before the event, he asked a question, "What do you think the biological world is like?" and distributed white canvas bags and colored pencils to guide the children to show their biological world in the form of painting. Some people think that biological world is rabbits eating carrots, and some people say that biological world is grassland. It is obvious that the children have a certain understanding of animals and plants. The older children thought of the microorganism level under the prompt, but it can be seen that the understanding is relatively superficial. Our event helped the children to deeply understand the definitions of animals, plants and microorganisms by playing simple and vivid cartoon science videos and experimental demonstrations, and stimulated their enthusiasm for exploring biology. Then, she showed pictures of microorganisms under a microscope, which won the children's enthusiastic attention. At the end of the event, she introduced our iGEM team and popularized the application of synthetic biology in the treatment of enteritis. The children actively participated in the discussion on intestinal probiotics and raised many questions about synthetic biology treatment. Everyone's ideas were rich and colorful, full of children's bold imagination and speculation about biology. This event unveiled the mysterious veil of synthetic biology for the children, planted the seeds of biological research in their hearts, and stimulated their interest in devoting themselves to biological science research in the future.
On July 31, 2024, members of the NJTech-China team went to the Experimental Primary School in the Economic Development Zone of Jugang Town, Rudong County, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province to join the Summer Care Class, and brought a science popularization activity full of fun and educational significance to the children of the Experimental Primary School. In this activity, we led the children into the world of biology and explored the mysteries of biology with them through explaining PPT and playing games.
In this fun and informative activity, our team members transformed into magical biology mentors and led primary school children on a fantastic journey to explore the mysteries of the intestines!
At the beginning of the activity, we used a vivid and interesting animation video to compare the intestines to a colorful forest, where various hardworking little animals live - probiotics, which help digest food and maintain good health. Then, through role-playing games, the children put on special "bacteria" and "probiotics" costumes, experienced the fierce scenes of bacterial invasion and probiotic defense, and learned the importance of identifying and resisting harmful bacteria. In addition, we also designed an interactive question-and-answer session to answer the children's questions about enteritis in simple and easy-to-understand language, and guided them to make "healthy diet puzzles" by hand, so that the children can master the knowledge of balanced diet while having fun.
Through this colorful activity, the children not only gained a deep understanding of enteritis knowledge in an entertaining way, but also stimulated their curiosity and desire to explore the biological world. The careful design and guidance of the team members allowed every child to gain valuable experience in healthy living in laughter and interaction, and planted the seeds of health awareness for their growth path. In the future, we look forward to seeing more little health guards who use the knowledge they have learned to protect the health of themselves and others!
In a recent exchange activity, Gu Yang, the leader of the HP group of the NJtech-China2024 team, sorted out the direction and ideas of HP practice in detail for the HP group members of the ZQT-Nanjing high school team, and shared rich experience in social activities. Although both teams are committed to the research of enteritis-related treatments, their focuses are different: the NJtech-China2024 team mainly focuses on the research of human enteritis, while the ZQT-Nanjing team focuses more on the discussion of animal enteritis.
Gu Yang first introduced the experience and achievements of the NJtech-China2024 team in human enteritis research to the members of the ZQT-Nanjing team, and emphasized the importance of clinical trials, drug development, and patient education. At the same time, she also shared the team's experience in social activities, such as how to cooperate with medical institutions and how to organize popular science lectures, providing valuable reference for the ZQT-Nanjing team.
After listening to the introduction of Gu Yang, the HP group members of the ZQT-Nanjing team were deeply inspired. They said that although the two teams had different research objects, they had many commonalities in research methods, experimental design and data analysis. Therefore, the two teams can strengthen cooperation, learn from each other's experience, and jointly promote the development of enteritis treatment.
In view of the similarities and differences between the two teams, the HP group members put forward the following suggestions: First, strengthen academic exchanges, hold seminars regularly, and share research results and experiences; second, explore cooperation opportunities and jointly carry out interdisciplinary and cross-field research projects; third, strengthen popular science publicity to improve the public's awareness and attention to enteritis.
Through this exchange, the two teams not only enhanced their understanding, but also laid a solid foundation for future cooperation. At the same time, it also embodies the spirit of mutual help, mutual benefit, and sharing win-win results.
From July to August 2024, at Jinling High School and Nanjing Foreign Language School, our team carefully planned a popular science activity about enteritis knowledge for high school students, aiming to lead students to deeply explore the mysteries of the biological world, especially the mechanism knowledge of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through various forms such as experimental demonstrations, knowledge lectures and interactive discussions.
At the beginning of the activity, the team members introduced the basic concepts of enteritis, its causes and the prevalence of the disease worldwide in vivid language, which aroused great interest among the students. Subsequently, in order to allow students to understand the pathological process of enteritis more intuitively, we specially designed a series of experimental sessions.
At the same time, we led high school students to complete a week-long experimental experience in the laboratory of Medical Valley. The students were divided into groups, and each group was equipped with professional experimental equipment and reagents. Under the guidance of team members and the leader of our team's experimental group, the students personally conducted experiments to simulate the pathological process of enteritis. By observing the changes in cells under different conditions, the students have a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of enteritis. During the experiment, the team members also explained in detail the principles and purposes of each step of the operation to help students combine theoretical knowledge with practical operations.
In addition to the experimental session, we also invited a professional doctor to give the students an in-depth lecture on the mechanism of IBD. The doctor elaborated on the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and treatment methods of IBD from the perspective of molecular biology, providing students with cutting-edge medical knowledge. After the lecture, the students actively asked questions and had an in-depth interactive discussion with the doctor.
In order to make the event more colorful, we also set up an interactive question-and-answer session. By answering questions quickly, students not only consolidated the knowledge they learned, but also won exquisite prizes. The atmosphere on the scene was very lively.
This science popularization activity was a complete success at Jinling High School and Nanjing Foreign Language School. Through various forms such as experimental demonstrations, knowledge lectures and interactive discussions, students not only learned the basic knowledge of enteritis, but also gained a deep understanding of the mechanism of IBD. The activity not only stimulated students' interest in biological sciences, but also cultivated their experimental operation ability and scientific inquiry spirit.
In the experimental session, students participated in person and gained a more intuitive understanding of the pathological process of enteritis. In lectures and interactive discussions, students not only acquired cutting-edge medical knowledge, but also had in-depth exchanges with professional doctors, broadening their horizons.
This event not only provided a rare learning opportunity for students, but also accumulated valuable science popularization experience for our team. In the future, we will continue to carry out similar science popularization activities to bring a feast of knowledge to more students and help them explore the mysteries of the biological world.
On September 25,2024. NJtech-China2024 held a garden party of "Synthetic Biology, Small Carnival" in Chenyi Square of Nanjing University of Technology. In this activity, the students of NJTech-China2024 wet lab members will serve as the main work of science popularization propaganda. They used vivid language to lead everyone to understand IBD, approach the treatment of enteritis and feel the charm of synthetic biology.
The students in the wet lab group are mainly responsible for the experiments in the team. This time, they go out of the lab to lead more people to get closer to enteritis and synthetic biology. Students in the dry lab group are mainly responsible for wiki construction and data processing. This time, they will also go from behind the scenes to reality and communicate with the public face to face. The students in the HP group have always been committed to communicating and promoting the program. This time, they hope to tell more people about their feelings of communicating with different teams and let more people know about IBD and synthetic biology.
We have prepared five tents for this event. tent 1 has invited the ZQT-Nanjing team to join. The high school team will give a brief introduction about IBD and publicize their team's work.Tent 2 has materials made by our HP team, including badges, key chains, canvas bags, postcards and stickers. Students could pick up their tour admission cards and get their stamps here. tent 3 was set up with picture questions and card questions. the picture questions were set up with 9 synthetic biology related bacteria, and students only had to answer 3 questions to clear the questions. The questions were 40 synthetic biology related multiple choice and fill in the blank questions. All students can extract one answer and complete the answer correctly.Tent 4 has a sticky note to enjoy and wish for the future of synthetic biology. We put these good wishes on the team flag. Tent 5 was the reward redemption area. After passing the above levels, students could make a free intangible cultural heritage painted fan with the stamped ticket card.
The purpose of this garden party is to fully publicize the knowledge of synthetic biology in the university campus, and at the same time to publicize the NJTech-China2024 project, to increase the enthusiasm of college students for synthetic biology, and to bring happiness to everyone.
From July 15 to July 30, HP team members came to Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine to engage in volunteer service.
In an unfamiliar medical environment, facing complex medical procedures and unknown test results, patients inevitably need help in various areas, especially those elderly people who come alone. The operation barriers of smart devices and physical inconveniences make it difficult to see a doctor.
At this critical moment, the team members illuminated the patients' medical treatment path with meticulous care. The team members provided professional medical guidance services and carefully popularized health tips for patients; in the face of the crowds and chaos in front of the manual payment window, the team members turned into guardians of order, assisted the nurses on duty to effectively divert the crowd and maintain the order of the scene; for those patients with limited mobility and seeking medical treatment alone, the team members took the initiative to lend a hand and provide one-to-one accompanying services, from registration to medical treatment, from examination to medication, every step of the way; in the face of the popularization of smart self-service equipment, some elderly groups are troubled by their unskilled operation, and they turned into patient "smart guides" to guide the elderly to cross the digital divide and enjoy the convenience brought by smart medical care.
On July 22, it was the height of summer and the hottest time of the year. According to the old saying, "Winter diseases should be treated in summer". Under the careful guidance of Hu Dan, an expert from the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the HP group members carefully selected natural Chinese medicinal materials such as cardamom, cloves, angelica dahurica, and asarum, which have the effects of removing dampness, promoting qi, dispelling wind and relieving pain. They carefully prepared a traditional cultural experience activity of "Fragrant mugwort all summer, making sachets with skillful hands" in the Qinhuai Wuyixiang community.
The team worked with the elderly and children in the community to carefully select medicinal materials, weigh and mix them, and fill each spice. The prepared sachets were distributed to the elderly, children and sanitation workers in the community, hoping that they could feel the care brought by the volunteers in this hot summer. At the same time, we also conducted popular science education about IBD for the community and gave a brief introduction to our team project.
For the elderly living alone or in empty nests, the team members divided into groups to visit more than 300 families of elderly people over 75 years old, including more than 60 families of old party members, to understand the current situation and difficulties of elderly services. With the help of community grid management, the team members assisted the community in making phone calls to each elderly person living alone, carried out summer safety tracking work, and promoted knowledge of enteritis door to door.
