General laboratory safety
For our research project, we utilized a Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) laboratory. Here we strictly followed protocols that ensured the safe handling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Before starting with any laboratory work each team member completed a laboratory induction program that provided a thorough understanding of the principles behind safety and the best practices when working in a controlled laboratory environment.
The program included four courses:
- Laboratory Essentials
- Hazardous Chemicals
- Biosafety Awareness
- Gene Technology
After the completion of the courses, the team was given an extensive tour of the PC2 laboratory facilities, focusing on the measures designed for the management and containment of GMOs. This included decontamination procedures (autoclave), biosafety cabinets, filtration systems, and the use of specific laboratory coats used only for this laboratory. These are all critical for the prevention of the unintended release of GMOs.
Team Lab safety
For this project DH10B and RARE E.coli strains were used. These are non-pathogenic strains and possess a low risk for the team, ensuring minimal health and environmental hazards during experimentation.
Additionally, Li and his team capitalized on E. coli's inherent shikimate pathway to establish a novel synthetic route for vanillin production. By channeling metabolic flux through protocatechuic acid, they advanced the biosynthesis of vanillin, showcasing the potential of leveraging native microbial pathways in engineered systems (4).
In addition, each team member was equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE), which included lab coats, safety eyewear, and gloves, to minimize any potential exposure during the handling of biological materials and hazardous chemicals. Enclosed footwear was mandatory, and hair was required to be securely tied back to prevent any contamination or accidental contact with laboratory materials
Throughout all procedures, all protocols were strictly followed reinforcing the commitment to maintaining a secure and controlled environment in compliance with PC2 laboratory standards.
