2. Background and market research
2.1 Research at Hubei Provincial Cancer Hospital
Objective:
To communicate with clinical experts, investigate the clinical application prospect and feasibility of the team project, and get feedback so as to improve the project design, develop the application scenario and enhance the project competitiveness.
Implementation plan:
With the help of team leader Chen Jingyan, we successfully contacted Professor Bi Jianping from the Interventional and Radiotherapy Center of Hubei Provincial Cancer Hospital, and had a face-to-face communication with him about our project.
Content:
Team members Chen Jingyan, Hu Chenhao and Ding Yanru went to Hubei Cancer Hospital to conduct research on new cancer therapies and new applications, and interviewed Professor Bi Jianping from Intervention and Radiotherapy Center.
Details:
During hospital investigation, we have gained a lot of clinical therapy knowledge, which has guiding significance for the application and implementation of our project. We first inquired about the clinical efficacy of oncolytic virus therapy, and learned that this therapy happened to be applied in some departments of the hospital, with the advantages of good targeting and small adverse reactions, but also faced with the limitations of intratumoral injection on the convenience and repeatability of administration. Next,we talked about the popular cell therapy - CAR-T therapy, Professor Bi thought that it should be looked at rationally, and we can not deify it. CAR-T therapy has demonstrated enhanced efficacy in the treatment of certain hematological malignancies. However, its performance against solid tumors has been less than stellar, and it may be accompanied by severe side effects and complications. Professor Bi Jianping illuminated the distinction between clinical trials and laboratory settings by highlighting the different testing products, which made us suddenly realize that clinical trials indeed have more stringent safety requirements. From the patient's perspective, despite the favorable policies associated with clinical trials, the level of acceptance remains low, indicating that there is a long journey ahead for the advancement of clinical therapies. Concluding the interview, we were left with a profound understanding that extensive scientific outreach is crucial for the progress of medical science. This realization is also at the heart of our team's healthcare-related public welfare efforts, further solidifying our commitment to our path.
3. Exploring the Future
3.1 Wuhan Ilerite Biotechnology Co., LTD
Purpose:
From the laboratory to the industrial production, with the help of professionals to understand the future direction of our project to practical application.
Implementation plan:
With the help of teacher Liu Yi, we got in touch with Deng Xiaolong, the supervisor of Wuhan Ilerite Biotechnology Co., LTD., and made the preliminary planning of the research activities.
Content of the activity:
1.Interview with Supervisor Deng Xiaolong and Dr. Li
2.Visit Industrial Park
Details:
On the morning of September 20, 2024, team members Hu Chenhao and Ding
Yanru walked into Wuhan Elarit Biotechnology Co., Ltd. for research activities. In this activity,we not only had the honor to have in-depth exchanges with Dr. Deng and Dr. Liu about biological industrialization, but also visited three branch industry lines under the guidance of Dr. Deng.
Q: Dr. Deng and Dr. Liu, how do you do? We have learned that your company is a comprehensive biological company integrating R&D, production and sales. It has four sub-brands: Pricella, DIA•AN, Elabscience and Uni-science. The business scope involves flow antibody, cell and cell culuation-related reagents, cell function detection, cell metabolism detection, antibody protein raw materials, clinical IVD products, etc. Then after you know our project, do you have any good suggestions for our project to the actual production road?
A: Gene editing is a hot issue now. In vivo gene editing technology is not mature, and in vitro gene editing technology is low cost. The first thing we need to do is to think about the advantages of the project and whether there is data to support it. What are the advantages of targeting and safety of the outer membrane vesicles compared with liposomes?
Q: So, Sir, what data do we need to support our conclusion?
A: Whether it is drug delivery or gene delivery, what we need to verify is the efficiency of delivery, the efficiency of gene entry into the body, the efficiency of release, the efficiency of expression and so on.
Q: On the premise of proving the advantages of the project, what do you think are the advantages of our project in terms of cost?
A: We must ensure the effectiveness before we estimate the cost. The cost of common technologies on the market is very low. Your project is to use synthetic probiotics to artificially extrude outer membrane vesicles, so large-scale bacterial liquid culture, bacterial liquid volume, consumption and process stability required for extruding a certain number of vesicles are all factors that affect the production cost.
The communication with Dr. Deng and Dr. Li makes us deeply realize that a technology from conception to landing production is a protracted war, which requires our persistent efforts.
After taking a group photo with the two teachers, we presented the customized team accessories to the teachers and expressed our heartfelt thanks. Later, Ms. Deng led us to visit the industrial bases of the three branches located in Wuhan Optics Valley Biological City, introduced their main production businesses, and let us appreciate the scale, standardization and rigor of industrial production. During this period, Mr. Deng also expressed his ardent hope for the future development prospects of synthetic biology. He encouraged our new generation of young people to dare to think and work, to move from written learning to practice, to grow from practice and make continuous progress, and to become a new era force capable of assuming great responsibilities.
4. Sustainable development
4.1 Summary
Sustainable development is the core content of scientific outlook on development, which is a major strategic thought put forward by the Communist Party of China. It was included in the Party's constitution at the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and has become one of the guiding ideologies of the Party. Sustainable development refers to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. With relatively few resources per capita and a weak ecological foundation, the Chinese people have made a wise choice to choose and implement the sustainable development strategy, which will enable the Chinese nation to completely eradicate poverty and create a highly civilized society. Therefore, sustainability is of vital importance to the development of modern projects. On this webpage, we will focus on the various efforts we have made to promote sustainable development during the implementation of the project.
4.2 Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global development goals set by the United Nations, which will continue to guide the global development work from 2015 to 2030 after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expire from 2000 to 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) aim to comprehensively address the three dimensions of social, economic and environmental development from 2015 to 2030 and shift to a sustainable development path.
We align team projects with 17 global development goals, and after careful consideration, we have decided to focus on the following 3 goals:
Health and well-being ----SDGs 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Quality education ----SDGs 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Social equality ----SDGs 10: Reduce inequalities within and between countries.
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages is essential for sustainable development. With the progress of The Times, people pay more and more attention to physical health. Therefore, it is imperative to improve the people's ability to cope with unexpected and emergent major diseases. Our project uses the outer membrane vesicle (OMV) secreted by the human intestinal probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle1917 as a delivery vector to develop an in vivo gene editing therapy with high efficiency, stability, low cost, and few side effects. We work tirelessly to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

2. Quality education
Access to quality education is fundamental to improving people's lives and achieving sustainable development. Our projects focus on ensuring inclusive and equitable access to quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all people in troubled areas. In the education and participation part of the team project, we carry out educational activities for students at different stages, the general public and special groups, so as to improve the quality of education and give everyone learning opportunities, which is our common purpose. A series of targeted courses, such as popular science lectures, open classes and puzzle games, have been carried out for students at different stages. For the public, we have adopted a series of educational activities with the nature of popular entertainment and science, such as Douyin, Bilibili and wechat public accounts, to further expand the coverage of education. For special people, we guarantee their right to education, and provide them with simple science popularization in a caring and interactive manner. At every stage of our practice, we are working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of quality education.
3. Social equality
Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, impedes poverty reduction, and undermines people's sense of achievement and self-worth. Inequalities in income, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, religion and opportunity hinder the healthy development of society and economy in the world, which will lead to a series of adverse effects. Reducing inequalities requires progress and change. Our project proposes a new approach for in vivo gene editing therapy with low cost, good efficacy, few side effects, and stable effect for the treatment of major diseases. We can and should achieve equality for all. Our program wants to ensure that everyone has the right and opportunity to treat serious diseases in the near future.
