Bloom Busters

The 2024 Utah Valley University (UVU) iGEM Team-Bloom Busters is inspired to continue the work of the silver medalist 2023 UVU Team.

Our efforts are focused on harmful algal blooms in Utah Lake and other water bodies throughout the state. The 2024 team consists of 15 second to fourth-year college students, with various backgrounds in biotechnology, bioinformatics, forensic science, microbiology, business, and two advisory professors.

Harmful algal blooms are commonly caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus. We are working to synthesize a biological machine that will reduce the nutrients available to the HABs in the environment, and prevent these algal blooms from occurring in the future.
