Les terrasses de Blandan
Monday, August 5, 2024, three of our members went to visit the elderly residents of the nursing home Korian Les Terrasses de Blandan in Lyon to inform them more about microbiomes. With enthusiasm, Morjiane TABOUT, Flavie FILECCIA and Aymeric PERREL went there, equipped with their slideshow and a quiz with goodies. The goal is to enlighten these individuals about the microbiome and the importance of taking care of it. This two-hour presentation was followed by a questions session on microbiology, health and also about our iGEM project. It was a great experience according to our members :
A word from our members:
"It was a very enriching moment; these people were very interested in the topic. I really enjoyed explaining to them what we learn in our master’s in microbiology. It was a wonderful experience."
Flavie
"This intergenerational moment was a great opportunity to meet people interested in biology and to discuss various topics. I will cherish this memory!"
Morjiane
"A very good time with the elders of society; I really appreciated the questions we were asked and the exchanges we had together about biology in general!"
Aymeric
Special thanks
We would like to thank Anne PLOY and Celia GORJUX for their welcome and the trust they placed in us.
INSA LYON
Each year, a festival is organized at the engineering school where three of our members - Camille, Jeanne and Marion - study. This festival has now become the largest student festival in France, attracting over 45,000 attendees annually. Throughout the day, various activities are held, followed by musical performances in the evening. On May 18th, we had the opportunity to present our project to a diverse audience, including students from INSA Lyon studying various disciplines, as well as children, families from the local community, and visitors from all across France.
To make our booth accessible to any people from different backgrounds, we designed a game with questions on basic biology, offering a fun way to teach about microbiology. Participants could win prizes featuring our logo based on the number of correct answers. We also borrowed lab equipment from our schools to display bacteria under a microscope and created agar art for the event. Additionally, we prepared visual displays to explain our project in detail.
Beyond being an educational activity for newcomers to our project, this event was a great opportunity for our team to bond and have fun together in a different space. It served as a valuable team-building experience, helping to strengthen our relationships.
Special thanks
Special thanks to INSA Lyon's Biosciences department, especially Carole Knibbe, Anna Zaidman-Remy, Mélanie Ribeiro Lopes, Sandrine Chevaleyre and Veronique Pommatau for their precious help throughout this opportunity they gave us.
Aim: to eliminate the 3 insect pests from the field.
Preparation: put the 3 insects on the demon squares, and put Korha and Cheryl on the blue squares.
Principle:
Korha: can move a maximum of 4 squares during his turn. When Korha is on a square next to Cheryl, Korha can throw Cheryl 3 squares away. This is the only way to move Cheryl. Korha cannot move over bushes and trees, but she can send Cheryl (if adjacent) over obstacles.
“Korha doesn't attack insects directly, but is essential for Cheryl to get going!
Cheryl: cannot move on her own. Once during her turn, Cheryl can attract a pest of her choice from two squares. Cheryl can't attract an insect through an obstacle; attraction is done by going around it. If a harmful insect is next to Cheryl (adjacent square), the insect is eliminated and returned to its cross phase.
“Cheryl has an arsenal of sticky molecules, some of which attract insects. With Korha's help, nothing can resist them!
Insects: at the end of Korha and Cheryl's turn, the insects move 3 squares as far away from Cheryl as possible. they can't cross obstacles, nor can Khora and Cheryl.
Victory if all 3 insect pests have been eliminated before 15 turns.
“Hooray! This field has been cleared!”
Defeat if the 3 insects are still alive after 15 game turns.
“We may not have the right molecule to attract them”.
Turn: Korha plays first, then Cheryl and finally the insects.
Bibliothèque Part Dieu
Dorine and Haidi visited the Lyon library to introduce the BIO Snare project to a diverse audience. During the event, they hosted an engaging quiz workshop on microbiology, inviting people of all ages to test their general knowledge in a fun and interactive way. They also showcased the project’s promotional video, sparking interest and curiosity among the attendees. The day was a great success, allowing them to connect with many people from different backgrounds. A big thanks goes out to the Lyon library for their warm welcom and support in making this event possible !
A word from our members
It was a great experience according to our members:
"I really enjoyed taking part in this presentation ! We met many people of different ages and professional backgrounds, some familiar with synthetic biology and others discovering it for the first time."
Dorine
"These discussions with people of all ages and different backgrounds were incredibly enriching. Their feedback on the project boosted our motivation to keep moving forward. The quizzes added a fun element, making these moments more interactive and lively"

LE PROGRÈS and TRIBUNE DE LYON
On the 21st and 22nd of June 2024, the team was interviewed by journalists from two major French newspapers; LE PROGRES and TRIBUNE DE LYON. These media outlets helped us reach a wider audience. Readers and experts’ feedback we received provided valuable insights on our project, helping us refine and improve it.
Special thanks
We would like to thank Émilie Charrel from LE PROGRÈS and David Gossart from TRIBUNE DE LYON for their time and the opportunity to present our project to the general public.
Goodies, tee-shirts...
How can you have good communication without support?
Of course, we made goodies with the project's logo, such as recycled paper bookmarks, pins, stickers, eco-friendly cardboard pens and tee shirts bearing BIO Snare. We also made business cards with our contact information, social media, and QR directing to our Linktree. We showcase our progress including the promotional video and our wiki.
And that’s not all!
We also have our mascots - handmade from crochet - that go everywhere with us, everyone thinks they're ADORABLE.
During this event various research topics are presented by researchers and doctoral students through oral presentations.
It's the perfect opportunity to exchange with molecular bacteriology experts and share scientific knowledge.
Jess and Lilya presented our project for the first time in front of an audience of scientists ! It was a perfect opportunity to explain how we plan to achieve the goals of our project, while also benefiting from the insightful questions raised by the professionals in attendance.
Special thanks
We would like to express our deep gratitude to the organizers of this conference, our mentors Agnes Rodrigue, Erwan Gueguen and to all people present for allowing our team to introduce our subject during this conference.
Linkedin - TikTok - Instagram
Social networks, Linkedin Tiktok, and Instagram, have been an important means of communication for us, enabling us to showcase our project and our progress to the viewers, as well as to get in touch with other Igemers.
They enabled us to reach a wide audience, from biology/microbiology professionals and science students to younger students and the general public.
INSA Toulouse
Our team went to the Mini Igem Toulouse organized by the Insa- UPS Toulouse team. this event was an excellent opportunity to discover the projects of several teams taking part in the competition, as well as to present our own in front of juries. It was a wonderful opportunity to answer questions about our project, but also to see how other teams' projects were progressing.
