Khanatat (Keith) Engsombun

Role

Hi! My name is Keith and I am currently a junior at RIS, and I'm extremely excited to share my enjoyment and passion for Synthetic Biology through iGEM. This year I had the extreme privilege of being the Human practices Co-Leader, with that I was opened to looking at the implications of our work from a whole new angle. I found that this new dynamic allowed me to gain a true appreciation and understanding for the work we are putting in during lab hours, in terms of what we are doing, why we are doing it and what that means for the rest of the world, and with that I look forward to seeing all the wonderful projects in Paris!

Cacti are plants that have succulent stems, pads or branches with scales and spines instead of leaves. Cactus pads are actually modified stems with a waxy coating. The prickly spines are modified leaves that break up the evaporative winds blowing across pad surfaces, and help shade the stem.

Tulip cultivation likely began in Persia (Iran) in the 10th century, and it eventually became a symbol of the Ottoman Empire. Tulips were introduced to the Western world by Augier Ghislain de Busbecq, the Viennese ambassador to Turkey, who wrote of seeing the plants in Edirne, Turkey, in 1551 and later sent some seeds to Austria. The arrival at Antwerp in 1562 of a cargo of tulip bulbs from Constantinople (now Istanbul) marked the beginning of the horticultural tulip industry in Europe.

Primary Advisor

This is year four for Thailand-RIS at iGEM! We are taking a new direction with our approach this year, focusing on biomanufacturing rather than an agricultural project. The team has worked hard to integrate the engineering and human practices cycles into their work, and we are hoping to outreach to other schools in the area that may be starting their own iGEM programs. As with our previous three teams, we have set our sights high, but with a shift in focus this year we are learning from this experience and seeing where we can make an impact in the community. I am happy to provide guidance and assistance where needed and always look forward to the excitement of the jamboree that exposes our students to a whole new outlook of possibilities in the biological sciences. When I am not working with the team, I can be found working with my grade 12 Biologists, coordinating our IB Diploma Program and spending time with my family.
