Protector
Program
In the near future,
a war could be waged by an extremely lethal and drug-resistant pathogen.
This conflict involves a protagonist named KL49-type CRAB,
a carbapenem-resistant
Acinetobacter baumannii
that is
particularly rampant
in the Guangdong region.
The pathogen lurks
in public spaces,
with hospital and public restrooms' fecal matter
serving as a breeding
ground for its spread.
Our Protector Plan team, leveraging synthetic biology,
selects a probiotic known as Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN).
We aim to modify this microbial chassis
to establish itself in the environment
and effectively suppress the growth of the pathogen.
After countless trials and improvements,
Engineered bacteria
" EnN-Guaraians"
have finally been born.
Not only does it protect people
from pathogenic bacteria,
it also provides new ideas for the
future
fight
against
drug-resistant bacteria.
