EDUCATION
Introduction

In order to make more people understand synthetic biology and the social significance of our project. We specially incorporate sustainable development in our educational activities because this idea has been gradually a mainstream concept in today’s world. We disseminate relevant knowledge using a series of diverse approaches.. First, we produced educational materials for different age groups, including primary and secondary school students, college students and adults. For preschool children, primary school students and junior high school students, we produced easy to understand science popularization materials and went to Yuxin Community, Xisanqi, Haidian District, Beijing for science popularization activities.

For adults, we have also issued some brochures for the promotion of terpenes substances and carried out popular science education. We have also produced highly academic educational materials for high school and college students, and are contacting relevant personnel to prepare for follow-up popular science education activities.

In addition, our team has also published a lot of educational content related to synthetic biology, our project activities and products on social media such as WeChat official account, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili and YouTube.

We also included a lot of educational materials to make the interactions run smoothly, like puzzles related to synthetic biology, UNO cards with deep sea elements, posters introducing the project activities, and scripted kill games featuring our project products. We are committed to communicating the meaning and values of synthetic biology and the iGEM competition to people of all ages in a variety of ways.

2.Offline Activities
Introduction

On August 13th, our team organized a practice activity on our deep-sea terpene-based cosmetics in the Haidian District community, aiming to let more people know about the practical application of deep-sea terpene-based compound in skin care products.

1 Popularization of Science

  • synthetic biology
  • First, we conducted an educational overview of synthetic biology for the children, breaking it down into four key parts to make it accessible and engaging. We started with an introduction to synthetic biology, exploring its fundamental concepts, historical development, and the integration of engineering principles with biology. We provided a clear definition of synthetic biology and its practical applications in addressing global challenges like diseases and environmental issues. Finally, we highlighted its applications across various fields, including advancements in medical treatments, environmental conservation, and industrial innovations. This structured approach enabled the children to gradually grasp the complexity and broad scope of synthetic biology while sparking their curiosity about this cutting-edge scientific field.

  • Skin Issues and Coping Strategies
  • Because we plan to a terpene-based skin care product with antibacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory features, we explained the knowledge of skin care to everyone at the end of the activity. Sharing this knowledge can help individuals avoid using products incorrectly, empowering them to select the right skincare products for their specific skin types and prevent issues that arise from improper use. We also discussed the detrimental habits that can lead to skin problems and the positive habits that promote healthy skin. Recognizing that each age group has unique skin characteristics and skincare needs, we have provided insights into four distinct age categories, effectively summarizing the essential information for all.

    2 Perform and Guess

Our first activity was a fun game of "Charades", that was designed to engage the children and introduce them to ocean-related vocabulary. The children were enthusiastic and actively participated, with many of them correctly guessing the terms. As a reward, most of them received stickers for their efforts. The game was a great success, with high levels of engagement and enjoyment from the kids.

Through this activity, we not only made learning about ocean-related terms enjoyable but also indirectly provided the children with valuable information about the ocean. This helped deepen their understanding of our products and the broader context in which they fit. Overall, the event went smoothly and effectively combined education with interactive fun.

    3 Jigsaw puzzle

We designed a puzzle. First we prepared five puzzles, each with 35 pieces. Each piece has a Marine element, which is close to our theme of deep-sea compounds. We divided five puzzles into five sections, each designated for a different group of children. They will have five minutes to see which group can complete their puzzle first. The winner will receive a prize! All the children were diligent and enterprising, and can complete the puzzle and learn the knowledge on the pattern. Finally, the fifth group of children got the prize and put the puzzle together. In accompanying children, we can also let them gain knowledge through happiness, making each member happy.

    4 UNO

We wrapped up the game making in the final part of the day, playing a customized children's version of UNO with deep-sea creature flavor. The goal is to be the first person to get rid of all your cards. Each player plays a card matching the previous one by color or number among other plots that modify the normal dynamics of the game. A player who has only one card left must say "Uno"; a failure to do so results in having to draw two cards. Both parents and children have praised this game, appreciated for its enhancement on the critical thinking skills of these kids however at a much fun filled experience.
