The results of the public survey remind us that the public's knowledge about synthetic biology and COVID-19 inhibitors is very limited. Therefore, through the means of multimedia to all ages, all classes, all types of people to educate, and introduce relevant knowledge. This will help promote our products and promote public understanding of synthetic biology and COVID-19 inhibitors.
We posted four tweets on our WeChat public account about synthetic biology, COVID-19 inhibitors, and the introduction of the COVID-19 inhibitor screening platform. These tweets are introduced from the perspective of the public as science popularization. Therefore, posting tweets as an approach to education is aimed at a broad mass audience
On August 10th, we jointly launched a joint live broadcast of synthetic biology science popularization on wechat video platform with 11 teams including Hangzhou MedX. WeChatare two reasons to participate in this joint science popularization live broadcast. First of all, our team has a limited capacity to fully educate the public about synthetic biology. Second, our influence is limited, and we should join forces with other teams to expand our influence in synthetic biology, a relatively niche field of knowledge. In this joint live broadcast, we started with our own project and made a scientific presentation on our project theory from the perspective of synthetic biology.
The live broadcast received a good response. The total number of viewers was 3,782, with 35,000 cheers (from wechat live background data). It can be seen that through the form of live broadcasting, we have achieved the educational purpose of popularizing synthetic biology for a wide audience.
On August 10th we participated in the iGEM conference "The Future of Synthetic Biology Education, How to Cross disciplinary Barriers" hosted by RENASCENCE and HBEC. Our hp leader served as the host and chairman of the planning team for this event. In this activity, our team members formed a reporting team and conducted a mock defense on stage. In addition, we communicated with the guest teachers and students from other teams. The main gain of this activity is that through the teacher's comments and the communication between students, we have realized the shortcomings of our project and can improve it. This activity was live broadcast, and through online live broadcasting, we also popularized the knowledge of synthetic biology to the outside audience from the perspective of our own projects.
On September 24th, members of our team went to Shanghai Renascence Biotechnology Co., Ltd. An educational presentation was conducted for employees in the company. As a biotech company, Renascence consists of people who are biologically trained and those who are not in the logistics or other departments. In response to this situation, the students in charge of the lecture adjusted the content of the lecture. At the beginning of the lecture, we first introduced the basic information and research progress of synthetic biology, so that the audience without biological foundation can easily understand the content of our project. The overall content of the lecture was also reduced in difficulty by deleting the overly academic part and introducing more about its application to practice in society. The employees of the company said that the seminar benefited them a lot and they learned a lot. At the end of the event, we gave out a full set of our team's peripherals to the audience to show our appreciation.
After several offline science education activities, we realized that synthetic biology, as an emerging discipline field, is not well understood by most people. We believe that as iGEM participants, in addition to using synthetic biology knowledge to develop technological products that benefit society, as a by-product of the project, we also have an obligation to educate the public about synthetic biology. Therefore, we held activities to popularize synthetic biology. By explaining some biology-related knowledge, we let everyone approach biology, understand biology, fall in love with biology, and develop biology. Thus, we aim to improve the public's understanding of synthetic biology and stimulate their interest in this discipline field.
