Communication

Overview

Communicating, collaborating, and sharing experience with various iGEM teams is an essential part of participating in iGEM project. This helps us obtain cutting-edge information, improve project quality, build research networks, and jointly build a broad platform for researchers to inspire and progress together.

Conference of China iGEMer Community(CCiC)

1.Purpose

Effective communication with other teams is indispensable for the smooth advancement and successful implementation of a project. Throughout the project's progression, new information, experiences, skills, or knowledge constantly emerge. Through communication, these valuable resources can be shared and disseminated among teams and even throughout the entire iGEM community. As the project progresses, it may be necessary to adjust plans, strategies, or resources based on actual circumstances. By communicating with other teams, feedback can be collected, performance can be evaluated, and opportunities for improvement can be identified, thereby enabling continuous optimization of the project to ensure its smooth advancement.

2.Action

The Conference of China iGEMer Community (CCiC), a nationwide exchange event initiated autonomously by Chinese iGEM participating teams, aims to provide a platform for resource sharing among participating iGEM teams and young enthusiasts of synthetic biology in China, thereby promoting mutual learning and exchange. This year, our members of the NWU-CHINA-A attended CCiC, eagerly participating in this synthetic biology event. We hope to gather insights from various sources, broaden our project ideas, and establish closer cooperative relationships with other teams, laying a solid foundation for future interactions and collaborations.

3.Feedback

Through this exchange meeting, we have absorbed the highlights of many outstanding teams while also clearly recognizing our own shortcomings and areas for improvement. We showcased the essence of our project through creative posters. we engaged in deep exchanges with many teams about their experiences and challenges, sharing unique insights and solutions, and jointly exploring paths for project optimization. We also conducted field visits to the National Center of Technology Innovation for Biopharmaceuticals (NCTIB) with teams from China Agricultural University, Ocean University of China, and others, gaining a close-up feel of corporate culture and an innovative atmosphere, broadening our horizons, and stimulating innovative thinking and practical motivation. The UM-Macau team from the University of Macau, which also focused on exosome therapy this year, engaged in deep-level exchanges and sharing of project-related details with our wet lab team members.

iGBA Forum

1.Purpose

Inspired deeply by the CCiC , we embarked on a systematic and in-depth exploration to clarify the intrinsic connection between our project and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as how our project's unique characteristics and Human Practice activities could tangibly advance the realization of the SDGs. It was necessary for us to engage in exchanges with other iGEM teams regarding SDGs, accurately pinpoint our project's central value and challenges, and delineate the logical framework linking our project objectives, implementation pathways, and sustainable development.

2.Action

Our team participated in the 2nd iGEM Greater Bay Area Synthetic Biology Industry-University-R xchanges with multiple iGEM teams and learning from each other. The forum also featured Dr. Yuhan Bao, who shared valuable insights on synthetic biology, sustainability, and competition strategies with the iGEMers. Initiated by teams from Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech-Med & SUSTechOCEAN), University of Macau (UM-Macau), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus (BNUZH-China). The forum primarily focused on the relationship between SDGs and iGEM, synthetic biology, and offered valuable suggestions for refining future iGEM projects from these perspectives.

3.Feedback

Through this exchange, we clarified our own SDG objectives. Our in-depth interactions with various iGEM teams not only enriched our scientific experiences and project optimization strategies but also illuminated us with unique perspectives on SDGs and Education from other teams. Drawing from the inherent features and natural attributes of the engineered exosome therapy for MPS II, we uncovered its potential contributions to the United Nations' SDGs. Moving forward, our Human Practices will revolve around enhancing health and well-being and quality education. Moreover, we will continue to deepen our collaborations with other iGEM teams, driving the popularization and development of synthetic biology.

The Northwestern China iGEM Meetup

1.Purpose

After half of the project was completed, it became particularly important to clarify the opinions of others on our project, but around us, there are few opportunities to communicate with more iGEM teams. Therefore, we want to establish a platform for iGEM teams in Northwest China to learn and communicate with each other in depth. And we want to build a bridge that allows teams to show their work, encouraging more people to participate in discussions and enabling our team to gain valuable suggestions and inspiration.

2.Action

Our team hosted The Northwestern China iGEM Meetup, inviting ten iGEM teams from different schools to share and discuss online or offline. And we engaged in in-depth exchanges with the AFMU-China team across various fields, including experimental operations, human practices, and art design.

3.Feedback

In this exchange meeting, we discussed the feasibility of our project with excellent teams from different schools, and listened to the suggestions and experiences of other teams, which inspired us to think creatively and improve our project and future activities. At the same time, through this exchange conference, we engaged in discussions in the field of synthetic biology with members from diverse backgrounds and projects, establishing close academic connections and bonds of friendship. We hope to create even more remarkable chapters in the field of synthetic biology.

Central China iGEM Conference

1.Purpose

As our project progresses, we hope to engage with other iGEM teams to share project results, seek partnerships and resources, and obtain professional guidance and feedback. This will allow us to reflect on the work we've done so far and make necessary adjustments during the next stages of the project to enhance our team's competitiveness and innovation capabilities.

2.Action

Our team was invited to participate online in the "Building the Future Together – 2024 Central China iGEM Conference" initiated by the iGEM HZAU-China team from Huazhong Agricultural University. We engaged in discussions with 15 other iGEM teams, including teams from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Ocean University of China, and Hubei University. Each team explored synthetic biology knowledge based on their projects, discussed the challenges encountered during their project development, and shared insights on areas such as human practices and artistic design.

3.Feedback

Through the discussions among the various teams at this conference, we gained a deeper understanding of the key issues within our project and learned more about how to integrated human practices into the project. After recognizing the diversity of different projects, we realized the importance of translating academic knowledge into forms that are accessible to the public, which is also crucial for raising public awareness about MPS II patients. Our team also revisited the discussion on how to enhance the innovation of human practices. We recognized the feasibility of collaborating with pharmaceutical companies and other socially influential organizations to boost the impact of our project. Based on the reflections from this conference, we plan to further modify and refine our project to ensure it aligns with iGEM's core values while also being more sustainable and scalable.

Joint Activities of Multiple Universities

BUCT China, NAU-CHINA,NWU-CHINA-A and AFMU China have jointly planned and produced a journal that covers content from various teams. This journal aims to comprehensively promote the project achievements of each team, showcasing the unique charm and profound impact of the project. At the same time, it also carries the characters of popularizing biological knowledge, committed to presenting the profound and interesting biological science to readers in a simple and understandable way.
