Education is an effective means to enhance cognitive ability, reduce social inequality, and promote inclusivity. Throughout the project, we have designed a series of activities using different opportunities, aiming to raise awareness among the surrounding community about hepatitis B, reduce prejudice, and promote our synthetic biology and iGEM competitions.
In order to expand our influence and enhance public awareness, we have organized a series of activities targeting various age groups through campus carnivals and group fights. Carry out activities related to project introduction, scientific popularization of hepatitis B related knowledge and improvement of safety awareness.
1.1 We have set up an illustrated display board to showcase the background, goals, and expected results of the project. Arrange project members to explain specific details to spectators in easy to understand language, showcasing our project while showcasing our style. During the Battle of the Hundred Regiments, we focused on promoting the iGEM community and popularizing synthetic biology.
1.2 Learn now, Sell now and Win Prizes. All interested people can participate in our question-and-answer sessions, which pass on the awareness of "paying attention to liver health". After receiving our basic science popularization, the participating audience can participate in our prize winning Q&A activity. We have written some questions about hepatitis B, hepatitis B virus and synthetic biology. Audiences can get exquisite gifts by answering questions.
1.3 After a series of learning outputs, we asked them if they were willing to accept our ‘Learn again and again' interview activity. In the interview activity, on the one hand, we consolidated the basic knowledge of hepatitis B again, reminding the public to pay attention, discover and treat it early. On the other hand, learn about the public's views and thoughts on the social acceptance of hepatitis B patients.
1.4 At the two events, we arranged for multimedia playback of iGEM science popularization videos to help passersby understand our competition as much as possible.
1.5 In order to make science popularization more accessible to a wider range of age groups, we have set up a microscopic observation activity area on site. Children can intuitively feel the existence of the microscopic world, which is convenient for the guide to explain and for children to understand.
We organized a science popularization campaign with the theme of "Entering iGEM, Health for the Future". Organize activities for new students from the School of Bioengineering and Future Technology, as well as some members of society.
During the activity, our members introduced the connotation of synthetic biology, the progressiveness of CRISPR technology in this field, the pathogenesis of hepatitis B, and the iGEM competition from the perspective of synthetic biology. Throughout the process, everyone responded positively and gave positive feedback.
During the activity, we were surprised to find that everyone did not know much about the level of hepatitis B virus and the presence of hepatitis B antibodies in their own bodies, which just proves the importance of promoting the prevention of hepatitis B.
In order to enhance everyone's memory of the content involved in this activity, we have organized some small games to stimulate the stable existence of everyone's memory.
(1) Draw and Guess: Three groups of students will take the stage respectively. One student will use graphics to draw the text content, while the other student will guess words based on the drawn content. The group with the most correct guesses within three minutes will win. The winning group will receive exquisite small gifts that we have prepared. We have designed the scope of the topic to be related to biological knowledge in advance. The whole process was humorous and interesting, and we believe it will stimulate their interest in biology.
(2) Select five students as a group for the two-way loudspeaker, and the first person will receive a word, phrase, or sentence as the information they need to convey. Convey information to the next person through body language until the last one. We set the information word as' vaccination ', which is not only related to the theme of the event, but also hopes that participants and viewers can deeply remember the importance of vaccination.
We held a one-day independent study camp for high school students. Targeting high school students, Dalian University of Technology's School of Bioengineering opened up the "Key Laboratory of Intelligent Biomanufacturing" of the Ministry of Education and the "Liaoning Experimental Teaching Center", leading students to visit and learn about cutting-edge biological technology. Set up two scientific experience activities, "Plants in Test Tubes - Application of Plant Tissue Culture Technology" and "Microbial Painting - Application of Microbial Culture Technology", to experience the awareness of aseptic operation and standardized procedures in scientific experiments.
After experiencing and visiting, students can bring back their own plant tissue cultured seedlings to observe the growth of the explants. Due to the use of microorganisms in microbial painting, for safety reasons, we have prepared a petri dish for our cultivation. After the cultivation is completed, we will distribute the painting results to each individual.
Throughout the entire research process, we hope to stimulate students' interest in biology and increase their understanding of biology. We believe this will help them plan for the future.
In order to make more people know about chronic hepatitis B and synthetic biology, and pay attention to our project, we release science posters with the help of Tiktok. When making popular science posters, we decided to introduce hepatitis B and synthetic biology in the simplest way, taking into account the age, education level and understanding level of the people watching the video, so as to make publicity that can be understood by the public.
The theme poster of "Protecting Liver Health" was released, which introduced the importance of the liver, the spread of hepatitis B, the treatment of hepatitis B, and the future of curing hepatitis B. The total number of visitors in the four issues reached 17617. We hope to make poster viewers value their own health, actively prevent, monitor, and treat.
In addition, three basic science popularization posters of "Synthetic Biology" will be released, introducing: what is synthetic biology, how to understand synthetic biology, the scope of application of synthetic biology, the policy background and development potential of synthetic biology, practical cases of synthetic biology application, safety and ethical issues. Through these, promote science popularization of synthetic biology, gene editing and other related information to the public.
