Revolutionizing Sepsis and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Prediction using Fusion Proteins!
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by a disregulated immune response.
This leads organ failure and premature death.
20% of global deaths are sepsis related.
The Indian subcontinent experiences almost 4 million fatalities from sepsis every year, accounting for over a third of global sepsis deaths.
In resource poor settings, particularly India, the diagnostic criteria for sepsis is
relatively non-specific. This in turn could also be indicative of other diseases. These criteria include blood
pressure, respiration rate and mental status. It is thus useful to create a more accessible, affordable and
specific test for sepsis.
Thus, we created a rapid predictive tool using fusion proteins. These proteins
combine anti-Cystatin C nanobodies and different reporter proteins to target and detect Cystatin C, a biomarker
independently associated with sepsis, AKI, and mortality. This allows for point of care testing in resource poor
settings.
