Welcome to Project knockout!

This year, the City of London iGEM team have been working on a project to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in NHS hospitals to help combat global warming and protect healthcare workers against the harmful impacts of increased N2O exposure. The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 and sees around 1.3 million people a day.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes known as "laughing gas" is a highly potent greenhouse gas, which causes 300 times more warming than carbon dioxide over 100 years.

One source of nitrous oxide emissions is an anaesthetic used widely in hospitals around the world called "Entonox". We've been working to limit N2O emissions from this source using synthetic biology.
