We, Waseda-Tokyo, succeeded in ranking in the Top 10 out of 195 teams in the Undergrad Division of the iGEM2024 competition!

In the Undergraduate section, in which a total of 195 teams participated, the Waseda-Tokyo team was ranked in the top 10. This Top 10 finish is an unprecedented achievement for us—a first in the history of Japanese teams competing in this division.
This award is presented to the most outstanding project within the Bioremediation village. The Waseda-Tokyo team developed an innovative plastic recycling system, ”PET TWINS,” which was evaluated as a highly innovative and practical solution to the issue of plastic waste.
This award recognizes teams that document their part effectively, demonstrate its functionality, and provide a well-characterized, useful resource for the community. We won this award with a new composite part ”Optimized RBS for BIND-System + BIND-bearPETase + 6xHisTag.” For more details, please refer to BBa_K5436124.
Our modeling approach provided insights into the process from PET degradation to societal implementation within the PET TWINS system. For more details, please refer to the Model section.
This Award recognizes teams whose Wiki clearly communicates their project, is well-structured, properly cited, and valuable for future reference. Waseda-Tokyo’s Wiki featured intuitive navigation, visual design, and clear communication of technical content.
Medals are awarded to teams that meet various evaluation criteria, including project completeness, social impact, and technical achievements. The Waseda-Tokyo team fulfilled all requirements and was awarded a Gold Medal.
