Introduction

For any laboratory, the safety of the laboratory must be the most important aspect. Therefore, we regard laboratory safety as our most basic and indispensable part, and only by ensuring safety can we ensure the smooth progress of the experiment. We will demonstrate our safety awareness both in our experimental design and our laboratory environment.

Microbial safety

According to ATCC, We selected E.coli Top 10 preservation plasmids, E.coli BL21 and Pichia Pastoris X33 as chassis cells, and finally used Xylo acetobacter DSM2004 to produce our bacterial cellulose. And the four bacteria we’ve selected have no obvious pathogenicity in healthy adults to the extent that they’re currently known, can be used directly in the BSL 1 laboratory. Our selection and use of bacteria strictly follows white list and laboratory operating procedures.

Laboratory Safety

Biosecurity Law of the People’s Republic of China：

All of our actions during the tests are strictly in accordance with the Biosafety Law of the People’s Republic of China.

Laboratory safety operation training：

Before each experiment, personnel involved in the experimental operation will have a special safety officer to conduct relevant safety operation training, and participate in the centralized training on detailed experimental skills and relevant countermeasures.

Laboratory safety code：

Before the experiment: Before entering the lab, everyone should wear a lab coat and long pants to minimize exposed skin.

In the experiment: need to wear good latex gloves, if you need to contact other toxic reagents, you also need to wear PP gloves, when in contact with irritating substances, you also need to wear a mask.

At the end of the experiment: Make sure to cut off any unnecessary power supply and turn off all faucets before leaving the laboratory, remove contaminated clothing and gloves and wash hands before leaving.

Waste Treatment：

Liquid waste

• No pollution: In the confirmation of pollution-free direct emissions.

• Mild pollution: After classification and sterilization, classification is poured into the corresponding waste liquid bucket, and professional personnel will deal with it regularly.

• Heavy pollution: Pour the heavily polluted waste liquid into a yellow waste liquid bucket with the exclusive danger mark of biochemical reagents (some preliminary treatment may be required) and then seal it to the recycling personnel of a professional company.

Solid waste

• No pollution: After confirming no pollution, put it into a garbage bag and clean it regularly every day.

• Mild pollution: After disinfection to ensure its safety, the recyclable will be cleaned again, the non-recyclable centralized storage, waiting for the staff to clean.

• Heavy pollution: the heavily polluted waste is thrown into the yellow garbage can with the exclusive danger mark of biochemical reagents (may also need to carry out some preliminary treatment) and then sealed to the recycling personnel of professional companies.

• Sharp items: collected into the box with a yellow warning sign, such as recycling personnel of professional companies to solve.
